I can't afford the complete version, either. I just checked once again at Amazon: they are offering the Complete set, available November 21, for only $399.99. That's just $50 per disc; a mere pittance!

I love Davis' group of this period. Their E.S.P. album is perfectly named -- even when I watch old filmed performances of them I find it difficult to see how they can navigate the starts and stops, the tempo changes, how they can anticipate every possible move. E.S.P.

The Plugged Nickel dates make me ask: is anyone more capable on that ride cymbal than Tony? The atmosphere of these recordings is wonderful, even that inebriated guy adamantly making (noisy) reference to Paul Chambers while Ron Carter was playing!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16562969395232127451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21126193.post-50816597785702675862017-11-17T09:26:40.353+13:002017-11-17T09:26:40.353+13:00Thanks for stopping by. This is the first time I've seen the exterior, and now I'm very curious to see what the room, itself, would have looked like ca. 1965. Your 2016 "Tow Zone" photo answers my next question, which was going to be "does The Plugged Nickel still exist?" Can you point me in the direction of some interior photos of this place? I haven't been successful finding any.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16562969395232127451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21126193.post-15831840732937606142017-07-26T00:22:27.080+12:002017-07-26T00:22:27.080+12:00Great news - I'll add it to the list! So stoked... Sortie and Disposability were reissued by one of those euro public domain labels a few years ago but it had annoying audio glitches. Interesting what you say about referring to tradition without rehashing it... in recent years i went on a bit of a fifties piano trio bender and filled in a lot of gaps in terms of stuff that i hadn't explored yet. During that time, i found it hard to listen to any contemporary trio recordings as they clashed with the fifties stuff flavour wise (worth noting that i usually don't have a problem jumping around eras with my listening). Except, i found, for Shipp. His recordings were not retro in the slightest but they could sit perfectly alongside stuff from the fifties.
Yes, Nichols, Hill and Taylor are clearly of a feather with Shipp... maybe Paul Bley as well? Elmo Hope?
Although not obviously similar, i also associate Shipp with Bud Powell. Maybe it's just that i hold them both in such high esteem.
Cheers.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18034605693580192219noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21126193.post-2174044976538833922016-10-13T01:35:09.415+13:002016-10-13T01:35:09.415+13:00Interesting that they gave him such a range of mus...Interesting that they gave him such a range of music and he was familiar with all of it!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21126193.post-18240670295288089532016-09-09T03:47:52.252+12:002016-09-09T03:47:52.252+12:00Thanks for stopping by Kelly.

He came out to hear a gig that I was involved in with Mark Weber's Poetry Band in New Mexico several years ago. I was told that he was in the audience (I was petrified). He came to the green room and introduced himself a few minutes before we went on to play. Being that he was a traditional jazz player I thought he might not like what I did but actually the opposite was true and we became really good friends. A truly amazing guy and one of the great clarinet players of any era...

Bill PayneAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21126193.post-35064231803578478392013-04-02T00:54:24.022+13:002013-04-02T00:54:24.022+13:00Hi Paul

Lately I've had quite a bit of time free for listening hence the long list.
Mood definitely is worth noting and I try to pick things that I feel is right for that moment. Time of day helps too - picking times when I can focus in on the music.
For me, these things tend to move in cycles - Currently I am in a phase of checking out/revisiting lots of recordings - no doubt my attention will turn to just a few albums or an artist. Possibly when I get back from NYC as the trip has interrupted my pattern.
A.MAMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12730857933624595721noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21126193.post-78188666447515344832013-03-30T13:54:34.297+13:002013-03-30T13:54:34.297+13:00Greetings from NZ. The current list is very long though, and I wonder how much time you get to really listen to so many pieces. I tend to have phases when I may listen to thre of four artists repeatedly for a time and it is the repeat listenings that brings out the depths I may miss first time. It is also interesting to hear the same piece when I am in different moods. (try noting your mood before you listen to something, then check it again afterwards).
Paul GAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
