Kifu Mitsuhashi |
The majority of posts here deal with jazz & improvised music. I thought it was time I posted a bit on the 'Other' music I listen to. Usually these artists/recordings are on for the pleasure of listening - I do not study them the way I do with jazz recordings. Perhaps in time I will.
As a saxophonist I seem to be drawn to other wind instruments.
Shakuhachi: Kifu Mitsuhashi - "Art of Shakuhachi Vol.1"
Duduk: Djivan Gasparyan - "Apricots from Eden" and "Heavenly Duduk."
Bansuri: Ronu Majumdar - "Master of the Indian Bansuri" - this one is a fairly recent addition
Hilliard Ensemble "Tenebrae" - singing works by Gesualdo. I have a couple of other discs from other groups singing Gesualdo's work, though this is the one I have listened to the most.
Corsican vocal music "UNESCO - Corsica: Religious Music of Oral Tradition From Rusiu". A random discovery whilst scouring the Wellington public library's "World Music" section. Wonderfuly raw polyphonic vocal music recorded in 1976.Djivan Gasparyan |
Let's not forget The Beatles - Last weekend's apartment clean up was accompanied by "Abbey Road" and "Sgt. Pepper"
==== 2014 Addition ====
The Imperial Court Ensemble - Gagaku: Ancient Japanese Court and Dance Music - there is something about the intensity of sound that grabs me, all the while an unhurried, floaty feel remains - intense yet relaxed.
