Ornette Coleman's Something Else!!!! Reviewed by Art Farmer

Lately I've been working on some of Ornette's melodies - "Peace," "Broadway Blues," "Feet Music" and "Lonely Woman." The most recent has been "The Blessing" and I've enjoyed revisiting his earliest album which I hadn't listened to in a while. Something Else!!!! The Music of Ornette Coleman was compiled from three recording sessions in 1958 (February 10 & 22 and March 24). Here's Art Farmer's review from the July 1959 issue of The Jazz Review. It's great to read one of Coleman's contemporaries thoughts on his work.

Warne Marsh: Atlantic Album Review Part 2 - Jazz Review 1959

This review of Warne Marsh's self-titled album (partially recorded on this day in 1958) appeared in The Jazz Review (February 1959). The reviewer, Mimi Clar, dedicates plenty of space (in what must have been the longest review of Marsh's work at that point) to discussing Marsh's tone and intonation. She found his tone "so distracting as to have a hard time concentrating on the linear development of the music." Personal and different - yes, but "unpracticed" - I have to disagree. The inflections are part of what drew me in to Marsh's music.

Recently, I sent this link to some friends and thought I may as well post it here too.

The Jazz Review was published between 1958-1961.

Lots of interesting articles including album reviews by musicians - The February 1959 issue has Cannonball Adderley reviewing albums by Ahmad Jamal and Tony Scott and Bill Crow reviews Adderley, Paul Bley and Ray Charles.

The same issue contains a review of Warne Marsh's self-titled album on Atlantic. Possibly one of Marsh's longest reviews.... about 75% of which is dedicated to his tone (reviewer Mimi Clar is not a fan!). Great album - be sure to check it out!

Currently there are about half a dozen copies online (PDF files) - they intend to upload the journal's entire run.
